Financial support

We acknowledge the important and valuable contributions that foster carers make to the lives of children in the care of Telford & Wrekin Council and we pay them both a fee and an allowance for each child placed with them.

Weekly fees are reward payments that we pay to foster carers in recognition of skills, training and development.

The allowances we pay are to cover the cost of caring for a child and pay foster carers an allowance for each child based on their age.

The weekly allowance is for the foster carer to use to pay for items such as food, clothing, toys and basic furnishings.

Foster carers, once approved, need to register as self-employed as fees are subject to Tax and National Insurance.

During the selection process, we explain the payments to you in detail. When you become an approved foster carer, you will receive our Guide to Payments document for ongoing reference.

Please get in touch if you have any specific questions about payments and fostering or need to know more about how the finances of fostering work.

We also have a Statement of Purpose which all foster carers, staff and management adhere to.
