Long term Fostering

Long term fostering is when a child becomes a permanent part of your family. Some children can’t go home, but for them adoption isn’t possible. This may be because they have complex care needs or they have strong loyalties to their birth parents and do not wish to be adopted. Permanent foster caring gives children love, stability and support from childhood to adolescence and beyond.

Click on the profiles below to find out about some of our children who currently need foster homes in Telford and surrounding area. These children need a home until they reach independence.

Sara's profile

Sara

Sara aged 8 loves art and crafts projects and superheroes, especially Spiderman! She is a playful and fun loving child with an assertive and endearing personality. Sara is always on the go and, although she uses a wheelchair, she has boundless energy.

She is very small for her age but, in spite of this she is quick to make her presence known and is very strong minded and determined. Sara was born with a number of medical conditions. This means she has complex health needs that require 24 hour support to ensure she remains healthy and safe.

She would benefit from being with a family who are committed to understanding her medical needs and are willing to undertake extensive training with health professionals in order to meet these needs.

Despite this Sara is first and foremost a fun-loving 8 year old, who needs positive role models and an energetic family who enjoy doing fun activities. Like any child she needs clear, consistent boundaries and routines and would benefit from living with carers who can devote time to her education and to building a positive attachment with her.

Daisy, a foster child

Daisy

Daisy aged 12 loves horse riding, playing netball and reading. She is a friendly and polite young girl who is generally kind and caring. Daisy has settled extremely well at secondary school and is making excellent academic progress.

She has joined the school netball team and enjoys participating in tournaments. Daisy loves animals. She attends horse riding lessons at the weekends and her ambition is to go to college and work with animals.

Daisy can be distrusting of adults and can display defiant behaviour in order to ‘test’ her carers. She has experienced a lot of feelings of rejection in the past and would benefit from being with carers who are able to offer unconditional warmth and include her fully in family life. They must be able to provide clear boundaries and expectations to Daisy without blaming or emotionally disengaging from her. They will need to be accepting of who Daisy is whilst encouraging and supporting her to achieve her full potential and to develop a positive identity.

Anna

Anna

Anna aged 13 is an active girl with lots of interests, including drama, dance and horse riding. She is also very creative and loves art and baking. Anna is a kind and caring girl with a lively personality who would settle well in a family environment.

Anna enjoys spending time with her friends and she is currently developing her independent skills. She has had trials of being dropped off at the cinema and McDonalds to spend time with her friends and these trials have gone well.

Anna has found it difficult to manage her emotions in the past and would benefit from being in a loving and nurturing environment, with experienced carers who recognise her potential.

She would ideally be placed long term with a couple who have no other dependent children who can offer a stable and secure home into adulthood and beyond.

Connor's child profile

Connor

Connor aged 8 is an active boy who enjoys going to Cubs and swimming lessons. He also likes Star Wars and playing with Lego. Connor is a caring and inquisitive child, with a cheeky smile and a fun personality.

He is well behaved and at school he works hard and is popular with the other children.

He has a natural aptitude towards more practical things, evidenced by his love of building things and exploring nature.

Connor would benefit from living with a nurturing family with no more than one other child at home. Ideally his foster carers would continue to take Connor to the clubs he attends and be able to transport him to and from school in Newport.

They would need to be active and energetic and be able to implement clear and consistent boundaries within a secure and loving home environment

Brendan

Brendan

Brendan aged 9 loves being outdoors. He has a lot of energy and really enjoys being around animals, especially taking the dogs for a walk! He can be very chatty and he has a very good imagination. He enjoys making up stories and giving his characters super powers.

Brendan has low self-esteem and lacks confidence when faced with new activities. He can have intensive outbursts of behaviour that he sometimes struggles to control. However, these episodes are happening less than they used to and he is learning that this is not correct behaviour and will apologise afterwards.

Brendan needs a lot of love and support, in a safe environment where there are consistent boundaries.

He would benefit from living with a family where there are two carers. These carers will be experienced and work together as a team to provide Brendan with a stable, secure and nurturing home into adulthood and beyond.

He would benefit from being with an energetic couple who enjoy being outdoors and who wish to include him in their own family and help to build up his life story. They would also need to promote contact with his siblings to help him maintain his identity.

Jonah, a foster child

Jonah

Jonah aged 10 loves Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol and anything to do with pigs – he loves to go to on visits to farms where he can see and touch pigs. He loves being outdoors, at the park or at the seaside. He also takes lots of photos of himself on his iPad and likes to look at them.

Jonah’s global development delay means he struggles with communicating but uses his own version of Makaton, has some mobility issues and is incontinent. He attends the Bridge school. Jonah can be very affectionate and is eager to please but will scream and shout if he doesn’t like something or get his own way.

Jonah would benefit from being with a young, fairly active couple, possibly with older children. The family would need to be able to provide strong and consistent boundaries to manage and adapt Jonah behaviours. Ideally Jonah would have a carer who was already Makaton trained or would be willing to learn.

Smiling boy

Charlie

Charlie aged 11 has a keen interest in elite sports cars. He loves to discuss cars and has a good knowledge of them. He also loves football and other sporting activities.

Charlie has some additional learning needs and comes across as younger than his years. Charlie has experienced a traumatic childhood and can find it very difficult in social situations. He currently has a diagnosis of borderline Autism and this will be reassessed in 2019.

Charlie sometimes finds it difficult to regulate his behaviour, but, with support, he is learning to recognise this. It takes him a long time to develop trust with adults but once he has built a relationship he can be very loving.

Charlie has found the transition to secondary school difficult. This, combined with the fact that he is entering his teenage years with all the physical and hormonal changes related to this, has made for a confusing time.

He would benefit from living long term with a family who have experience of working with teenagers with challenging behaviour. An understanding of working with children with Autism would also be of benefit. Ideally Charlie would be the only child in the family in order that he can receive one to one attention.

Catherine, a foster child.

Catherine

Catherine aged 11 loves singing, reading and going clothes shopping. She is a happy, inquisitive girl, who loves to socialise and can clearly express her needs and wishes.

Catherine is a full time wheelchair user and needs to be hoisted for all her transfers. She can become very anxious about this, particularly when experiencing pain in her hip, and needs plenty of calm reassurance.

She would benefit from being placed with foster carers with experience of disabled children and a desire to further their skills in this area.

Catherine has experienced an isolated home life and has been witness to very confrontational behaviour. She needs carers who can help her recognise her abilities and potential, in a loving and nurturing home environment.

The home and garden would need to be adapted to suit a wheelchair user, with a ground floor bedroom of adequate size to accommodate a single profiling/hospital bed and mobile hoist equipment.

Home adaptations via a Disabled Facilities Grant application can be sought via the council to adapt the home to meet Catherine’s long term needs.

Matthew, a foster child

Matthew

Matthew aged 14 likes swimming, riding his bike and playing computer games. He wants to be a games designer when he leaves school and plans to go on to further study post 16.

Matthew is a likeable young man, but on occasion his autism can lead to fixed ways of thinking and seeing the world.

He has had a lot of rejection in his life and suffers from low self-esteem. However, he has a close relationship with his dad, whose medical condition prevents any consideration of Matthew returning to his care, and he sees him regularly. Carers would need to be mindful of continuing this contact.

Matthew has a rabbit called Missy and Missy would come with him to his new home.

Matthew would benefit from being placed long term with people who have experience in parenting vulnerable teenagers. He would also benefit from a strong male role model in the home and a solo male carer would be considered.

Elliot, a foster child

Elliot

Elliot aged 11 likes playing football, tennis and other sporting activities. He enjoys spending time on his tablet and playing board games, although he does like to win!

Elliot has a diagnosis of Autism and moderate Development Delay. Elliot can dress himself but it helps if clothes are placed in order for him.

He now attends a specialist educational provision but has struggled to make the transition from his primary school, which was very familiar and nurturing. His anxiety can manifest itself in challenging and aggressive behaviour, which can lead to him being restrained.

We would like Elliot to be placed with long term carers with the skills and experience to support him. Carers would need to be able to offer him a great deal of love, nurturing and clear routines and boundaries.

Rhea, a foster child

Rhea

Rhea aged 9 is a polite well mannered young lady who is energetic and likes to be active and involved in activities. She loves to go dancing, make craft things especially using glitter and attends church every week. She is very talented and puts in 100% effort in everything she does. She loves school and likes to try new things.

Rhea struggles with going off to sleep and can take a while to settle at night. She also displays jealous behaviours to younger children and sometimes is verbally challenging.

Rhea is learning that this is not correct behaviour and will apologise for her outbursts. Overtime this is improving and her school report doesn’t mention any of this behaviour.

Are you resilient with a robust family support network that could provide an active and loving home for Rhea, where she will benefit from being the youngest child and stay until she is an adult.

Bobby a foster child

Bobby

Bobby aged 11 plays the drums, likes eating out and going to the cinema. He loves taking things apart and putting them back together and thinks he might like to be a mechanic when he’s older.

A funny, happy and highly entertaining young boy who makes people laugh easily and is very intelligent with his sense of humour and enjoys laughing and joking with adults too.

Only now is he pursuing activities that he wants to do and he is eager to try new things and is thriving because he has been given the opportunity to grow in confidence and have a positive outlook. Bobby does like to make up, invent and fabricate stories and when challenged on this it is normally to do with gaining peoples attention, the need to be liked and wanting people to like him.

Bobby struggles with children his own age so would benefit from a family where there is a younger or older child or no other children and for Bobby to thrive we are looking for a family who can look after him and facilitate him to see his maternal grandparents until he is an adult.

He can sometimes find it difficult to manage his emotions; but with the help of consistent rules and boundaries he is learning to manage this and will take himself off to his room to calm down.

Oscar would benefit from living in a busy, loving and nurturing family who enjoy days out and taking part in activities together. He would be best placed with resilient carers who would be able to provide him with the emotional support and the stability he needs.

She does talk to herself about what she has done during the day and is currently being treated for Attention Deficit Disorder. Pippa is sometimes described as being in her own world but responds well to routine and being told of any changes to her routine.

Due to the additional needs that Pippa has, she would benefit from foster carers with experience of caring for children with additional emotional and learning needs. Pippa requires a family who will be able to invest time to enable her to settle. Pippa has not been nurtured within the care of her birth family and it is important that she is afforded this in her long term placement.
